We are very pleased to announce the Cloisters Practice and Westgate Practice will be merging in the near future, under the Westgate name.
There is more information below about this merger, plus a link for a FAQ (this will open as a PDF). We will update this page as we have more information for you.
The NHS is under constant pressure to meet the needs of local communities at both a Primary (GP Practice) and Secondary level (Hospitals).
As Lichfield is a rapidly growing city, both practices feel they need to combine their teams and other resources to respond to this growth.
The merger has an opportunity to improve the service level to our patients with potentially longer opening times, new services and making the most of the array of skills across the combined staff base.
We have consulted with the Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) of both Practices.
What does this mean for you?
The merger is likely to take place in the New Year. Further information is available in a FAQ document, which you can download from the link below
Patients will be able to see any of the GPs working with us. There will be
- 20 GP's
- 6 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and
- 10 Practice Nurses, supported by an extensive management and Patient Services team
Work towards the merger is already underway behind the scenes within both Practices in order to make sure that everything happens as smoothly as possible. This includes staff of both Practices working together and also working and liaising with external organizations such as EMIS who provide the clinical system for both Practices. This work may not be very visible to patients but rest assured we are beavering away!
Merger Date Brought Forward
As a result of the good progress that has been made ‘behind the scenes’ by both Practices and NHS England, it has been agreed that the date of the merger between Westgate and Cloisters Practices be brought forward to the 1st of December 2017.
We are very happy to comply with this, as this will minimise any disruption to the Practice’s services over the Christmas and New Year period which is often a busy time.
One of the changes that will take place immediately when we merge is that our current IT clinical systems (which include our clinical databases called EMIS) will merge into one single patient database. This will have an impact at the beginning of December when the databases are merged together. There will therefore be no pre-bookable appointments on Friday 1st or all day on Monday 4th December.

The closure will also affect the repeat prescription timetable and the revised timetable for this period is as below:
